If you have discoloured teeth, unattractive gaps, or chips from a childhood accident, you may want to invest in some dental veneers. This type of cosmetic dentistry improves your smile and boosts your mood, and helps improve your self-esteem. Many people with damaged teeth find themselves covering their mouth when they laugh or avoiding photos. With porcelain veneers, you can smile without fear and enjoy an evening out without worrying about covering your teeth.
However, dental veneers are an investment for many Australians, and before they commit to the procedure, they want to know: How long do veneers last?
What are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers fall under the umbrella of cosmetic dentistry and bond permanently to the surface of your teeth to cover any discolouration, chips, gaps, or misshapen teeth. At Dapto Dentists, we offer two options for our patients: Composite resin and porcelain veneers.
Composite resin veneers use thin durable resin shells, which your dentist bonds to your teeth with a light. Before placing them, your dentist thoroughly cleans and prepares your teeth through buffing and shaving to remove bacteria and reduce the possibility of infection. This roughened surface allows the veneers to fit snugly over your tooth.
Porcelain veneers often require two appointments to apply since they are uniquely created to fit your mouth. Following the same preparation and cleaning process, your dentist then makes a custom-designed porcelain veneer for your mouth. Once prepared, your dentist checks the veneer against your tooth for fit and colour and then bonds it to your teeth.
How Long Do Veneers Last?
While dental veneers can solve multiple dental problems, they aren’t natural teeth and can change colour or chip over time. So, how long do veneers last? The answer to this question depends on various factors, including what type of veneers you choose, how well you take care of your teeth, and if you have any accidents that damage the veneers. Additionally, if your veneers are on your front teeth, they may have a shorter life.
Composite resin veneers are less durable than their porcelain counterparts and often cost less. They can last on average up to 10 years with appropriate care. However, because porcelain is a harder, stronger material, porcelain veneers typically last up to 15 years.
While the initial health of your teeth can affect your veneers’ longevity, you can take several steps to increase their lifespan and keep your smile a brilliant white for longer.
Perform Proper Dental Maintenance
Brushing and flossing at least twice daily is essential not only for keeping your veneers in pristine condition but for your overall oral health. Make sure to spend about two minutes brushing in the morning and evenings.
Avoid Staining Foods
While you can still enjoy an occasional glass of Merlot or a delicious spaghetti bolognese, try to have them in moderation since these foods and drinks can stain your porcelain veneers. If you’re a coffee drinker, try adding milk to reduce staining, or brush immediately after drinking.
Schedule Regular Cleanings
If you see your dentist every six months for a standard check-up and cleaning, they can check to see how your porcelain veneers are holding up and keep your mouth healthy.
