Daily habits play an important role in keeping your teeth and gums comfortable between dental visits. While every person’s needs differ, a few simple routines are widely recommended as part of a balanced approach to oral care.
Brush gently and consistently
Most people benefit from brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Use gentle, circular motions and take your time rather than scrubbing hard. Replacing your brush every three to four months helps the bristles stay effective.
Clean between your teeth
Brushing alone does not reach every surface. Cleaning between teeth with floss, interdental brushes or another suitable tool can reduce plaque in areas a brush may miss, which supports the health of your gums. Your dentist can show you which method suits your mouth.
Mind your diet and hydration
Frequent snacking or sipping sugary or acidic drinks can increase the risk of tooth decay. Water, plain milk and whole foods are generally kinder choices. If you do have something sweet, having it with a meal is usually better than grazing throughout the day. If decay does develop, your dentist can discuss options such as tooth-coloured fillings after an assessment.
Keep up with regular check-ups
Home care supports, but does not replace, professional check-ups and cleans. Your dentist can spot early signs of concern, remove hardened deposits and tailor advice to your oral health. If you are overdue, booking an appointment is a sensible next step.
